Activity Exiting Guideline

Assessing the Exit at the End of the Activity

Did we exit successfully?

Activity Completion Report

The key document for NZAID at the time of actual exit (i.e. implementation of the exit action plan) is the Activity Completion Report, as described in Annex F of the NZAID Guideline on Activity Reporting

Questions for the Activity manager and for NZAID to consider at this stage include:

  • Was the exit action plan implemented as designed? What changes were made and why?
  • Was there a successful handing over or transition? Was there good communication and continuing good will among the partners?
  • What factors are evident that indicate that project outcomes will be sustained?
  • What are the lessons learned? What worked well and what could have worked better? Recommendations for improving the design and implementation of the exit strategy.
  • How can NZAID and partners build on a successful exit strategy?

Independent evaluation

If an independent evaluation of the Activity is conducted, it should assess the effectiveness of the exit with similar questions being asked as for the Activity Completion Report. An evaluation provides an opportunity to assess what may not be possible at the end of an activity, in particular to what extent are the project outcomes being sustained?
