What is the status of this document?

This document is a guideline and must be consulted and applied as appropriate.

What does this guideline cover?

This guideline covers the principles and practices underlying the monitoring of development Activities.  Monitoring provides information about how allocated funds are being used and whether progress towards expected outcomes is being achieved. Monitoring can be broadly defined as the systematic collection and analysis of information to provide management and the main stakeholders of a development Activity with information for decision-making.

This guideline is one of a series of NZAID Guidelines on Activity Cycle Management and should be used in conjunction with them.

What will this guideline do?

The main purpose of this guideline is to support the day-to-day management of development Activities we are helping to finance. It is also intended to help:

  • track progress during implementation
  • facilitate wider stakeholder awareness and participation
  • account for the use of resources against the delivery of results, and
  • provide basic data for more periodic evaluative processes. See NZAID Evaluation Guideline Series.

Who is this guideline for?

Local ownership of monitoring systems and processes is very important. This guideline is intended to help NZAID staff and consultants support our partners to establish, strengthen and make effective use of their own monitoring systems.
