What does this guideline cover?

This guideline covers the principles and framework of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach, and its practical application to development Activities.

What will this guideline do?

This guideline:

  • overviews the principles and framework of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA)
  • explains how the SLA can add value to development Activity planning
  • indicates when the use of the SLA should be considered
  • sketches out how to initially apply the SLA, including key questions, an illustrative process, and related methods
  • identifies useful SLA resources for further reference

Who is this guideline for?

This guideline is for NZAID staff and development partners involved in the identification, design, monitoring and evaluation of livelihoods-related Activities.

It is intended to equip DPMs and staff at Post (with appropriate support from NZAID advisers) with sufficient understanding of the SLA to incorporate it in their work, but not necessarily enough for them to be able to do a Sustainable Livelihoods analysis themselves - which will usually be the responsibility of development partners and/or contractors.
