The analytical tools focus on NZAID’s policy direction and are designed to assist staff analyse the causes of poverty and design effective approaches to reduce poverty.
- Environment Mainstreaming Guideline (in development)
- Gender Analysis
This guideline covers key gender concepts and outlines the methodologies used in gender analysis to assess the differential impact of a development programme or Activity on females and males and on gender relations.
- Human Rights Mainstreaming Guideline
- This guideline covers: NZAID commitment to human rights, NZAID and Mainstreaming, Human rights concepts and principles, Key questions to ask at all stages of the programme cycle, and during appraisal processes, Expectations at various stages of the activity cycle. The Guideline will assist staff to implement NZAID’s approach to human rights as a means to ensure good outcomes and manage risks across NZAID programmes (during policy and strategy development and throughout the activity cycle).The Guidelines aims to assist NZAID achieve its objective of screening all activities for human rights impact.
- Poverty Analysis Guideline
- This guideline covers the fundamentals of poverty analysis and different methodologies for the application of poverty analysis at the country, sector and development Activity levels.
- Screening Guide for Mainstreamed and Other Cross-Cutting Issues
This Screening Guide assists NZAID staff to take into account and address NZAID’s poverty elimination mandate, and mainstreamed and other cross cutting issues in the identification, design, and appraisal of all NZAID development Activities. It also applies to NZAID work with wider bilateral and programme strategy development and appraisal.

This guideline covers the principles and framework of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach, and its practical application to development Activities.
